Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring?
Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, sun protective clothing, your own food and drink (unless catering pre-arranged).

What if I think I may get seasick?
For any of you in doubt of your “sea legs” we can recommend the Paihia Bomb seasickness pills, you will need to obtain these directly from the Paihia Pharmacy prior to your arrival in Tauranga.

Do I need to pay a deposit?
Yes, a deposit of $250 is required at the time of booking with the balance payable on the day of the charter.

Will my deposit be refunded if I cancel?
If you cancel within 14 days of your booked date your deposit will NOT be refunded. Your deposit however can be transferred to another date. If your trip is cancelled by the skipper due to bad weather your deposit can either be refunded in full or transferred to another date.

What happens to my charter if the weather is bad?
It is at the skipper’s discretion to cancel the charter due to bad weather. At times there will still be options to fish, however the style of fishing may change from your original request. You will be contacted prior to your charter to discuss your options if the weather forecast is not ideal.

How long is an “all day” charter?
An all day charter is approximately 9 hours. For example if we leave the boat ramp at 6.30am we will return at 3.30pm. Start and finish times will depend on the tides and weather forecast.

How long does it take to get to the fishing grounds?
The fishing grounds can be anything from half an hour to one hour from port.

How many people can fish on your boat?
Our boat is surveyed to carry 5 passengers, plus the skipper. On the day your skipper will advise you to what the best techniques are at that current time to land some fish. The style of fishing will determine whether you have one angler fishing at any one time or all five fishing at once.

Can I bring my own camera?
Yes of course, there is nothing like having photos of your fish to show friends and family when you get back to shore. I will have my camera with me and will take as many photos as possible, as you can imagine sometimes it gets quite hectic onboard and it will not be possible to take photos all the time. If you would like a copy of the photos I take please bring along a memory stick and I will download a copy for you.

How many fish can I keep?
Fishing for the Future is important to the Extreme Sportfishing Family. Nothing tastes quite as good a fresh fillet of fish caught by your own hand, straight from the ocean. However in order to ensure future generations have the same access to the abundance of fish that we have now, we have imposed our own limit of one Kingfish per angler (with a maximum of three per group). Rest assured you will still have bragging rights when you get back to land as all going well we will photograph your fish. We promote Tag and release of all Game Fish but on the day it is up to the angler to make the final decision on whether to Gaff or Tag. We are proud to be a part of the Blue Water Research Kingfish Tagging project. Any fish you release will be measured, tagged and the data sent away to Blue Water Research. If your fish is recaptured they will send you the details on what your fish has been up to since it was tagged.

Where can I read about your recent trips and see photos of your catches?
You can read all about my fishing adventures, both personal ones and charters in my newsletter. You can also sign up to receive regular newsletters and photos.

I am from out of town can you help me find accommodation?
For our out of town anglers we can also put together accommodation packages. Accommodation in Tauranga ranges from campgrounds to five star luxury hotels. Please let us know if you would like assistance with this.

Do you do fishing trips outside of Tauranga?
We can also access White Island, Waihau Bay and the Coromandel. Prices for these trips are available upon request.

Do you provide meals onboard?
No, you will need to bring your own food and drink for the day. Onboard catering can be arranged from a local bakery (filled rolls, cakes and slices) at a cost of $20 per person.

Is there a toilet onboard?
Yes, there is a portable toilet onboard.

Am I allowed to use my own fishing rods and tackle?
Yes you can, if you are unsure what to bring please contact me directly for advice.

Do you hire fishing rods and reels?
Onboard our boat we have some of the finest fishing tackle available on the market. If you do not have your own fishing tackle you can hire ours at a cost of $25 per person. One of the best things about booking a fishing charter is that you get to use the latest and greatest gear without having to buy it yourself.

Do I have to pay for breakage or lost equipment?
We have a wide variety of tackle available onboard for your use; you will need to pay for any poppers or jigs lost at sea. We purchase these in bulk so are able to offer you competitive prices on these items. Any breakages or lost rods/reels overboard from the result of misuse will also be charged back to the angler responsible at the time.

Can we hire your boat to fish in competitions?
Yes, the competition dates fill up quite fast, it is best to book as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment if you wish to fish any competitions. Check out our calendar for competition dates and availability.

Can I bring Banana’s onboard your boat?
I have heard this is bad luck! Good question! This is a very old superstition dating back to the 17th century. Over the years as with all superstitions it has grown in mythic proportions. I have even heard of Hawaiian skippers that will not let you on the boat wearing yellow, or using banana boat sunscreen. Fishermen are a quirky and superstitious bunch, so if in doubt don’t pack a banana for lunch. If you do bring one with you then at least all your mates will have someone to blame if we don’t catch anything!!!

I can’t afford to do a whole charter by myself, do you offer shared charters?
This is not something we offer regularly, however I have been in this position myself and I do know it can be difficult to organise your own group. Every so often I will set aside a day that is for shared charters only and this will be highlighted on the calendar on our website. These days will be filled on a first in first served basis and will be subject to minimum numbers. The shared dates will be advertised in our newsletter and on our calendar so please click here to join up so that we can keep you informed.
